Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park

Monday 3 September 2018

O and I spend the morning catching up on the everyday tasks we have been ignoring while hiking Lassen. For the first time since this summer’s trip began my blog is up to date! We get laundry done and reorganize Vincent. Finally we drive to Jed Smith State Park. Just a short distance north of Crescent City we enter an entirely different world. The redwoods lining the road are amazingly tall and of great diameter. We drive into the green tunnels of the park and find campsite 52 on the outer edge of the loop, right on the Smith River. The river is the only free-flowing river in California. The flood plain is broad and “paved” with smoothly rounded stones so that we have an open sunny area to one side and dense dark woods to the other. We even have our own personal redwood at the edge of our site. It is a beautiful place.

O and I would be content to just sit by the river and watch the world go by, but there is much to see and do, and we have only two days here. This area is definitely on our “we must come back” list. After dinner back in Crescent City we return to the park to study maps and try to decide what to do tomorrow.
