Exploring North America

McCarthy & Kennicott

Friday 1 August 2025 We are up at 5:15 this morning. It’s easy to wake up early when it begins getting light at 4 am. We eat our bran muffins accompanied by yogurt and camp instant coffee. We also savor the last of our local Washington cherries and strawberries. Our shuttle arrives promptly at 7:30. There are already 5 people aboard from the first pick up at a lodge. After

Haines to Copper Center, Alaska

Tuesday 29 July 2025: I’m awakened around 6 am by the sound of an engine starting. It’s the truck parked next to us. I watch as it pulls out of the parking lot and drives off. A bit past 6:30 I wake O. We get dressed (easy because mostly we just slept in our clothes) straighten up Vincent for driving and head into Haines proper, just a few miles up the road. We stop for breakfast

The Alaska Marine Highway

On the Ferry Columbia: Bellingham WA to Haines AK Friday, 25 July 2025: We’re off on our first road trip since 2022. We finished packing this morning and now we’re on our way to Bellingham and the Alaska Marine Highway ferry. About the ferry: I read online that Ferry reservations for the following summer usually become available beginning in January or February so I began checking in December 2024. By

Riverside State Park, Washington

15 October 2022, Saturday  At 5 am we’re up and packing Vincent. I take Lucy for a pre-sunrise walk. O sweeps the cabin floor, then I vacuum the rug and the lower of the bunks, which is a bit furry since Lucy decided to sleep there last night. We drive along the narrow road that winds through the Jefferson River Canyon. I take it slowly in the dark. The sun

Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park MT

13-14 October 2022 Thursday and Friday We’re on the road early again. We stop in Glendive at Bloom and Vine: pastries for O and a bagel for me, plus two cups of coffee. Once again we are buffeted by crosswinds as we drive along I-94 and onto I-90. We arrive at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park just after 4 pm. The ranger is just leaving the park office as

Makoshika State Park MT

11-12 October 2022 Tuesday Today’s drive is about 440 miles, back to Makoshika State Park in Montana. It’s 6 am. We pack Vincent in the dark and walk Lucy. The woods glow silver in the moonlight. By 7 we are on the road to Fargo ND where we stop for pastries and coffee. We are buffeted all day by strong crosswinds as we make the long drive on I-94 across

On to Maplewood State Park MN

9-10 October 2022 Sunday We have 480 miles to drive today. I ordered breakfast online last night for pick-up this morning at Ancora Restaurant. Pick-up goes quite smoothly. Our breakfast is waiting on the counter when I enter the restaurant. The coffee is hot and good. O and I eat in the van in the parking lot. We can’t finish the huge breakfast so we save the potatoes for tomorrow

Ohio and Wisconsin, Visiting Relatives

5-6 October 2022 Wednesday and Thursday Cleveland The weather is certainly nicer than when we were here in August. We have cool, crisp fall days. S and C do lots of cooking: garbanzo soup for dinner, accompanied by the multigrain bread O and I brought from Portland. They’ve also baked chocolate chip cookies, and on Thursday, a batch of pumpkin cranberry muffins for breakfast on the road Friday morning. We

On to Lost River State Park WV via Nockamixon State Park PA

28 September 2022, Wednesday On to Pennsylvania: We leave Cedar Haven by 7:30 in order to get to Standard Baking Co. in Portland when they open. I buy 2 multigrain miches, 2 whole wheat sourdough loaves, 2 baguettes and some pastries for the next few days’ breakfasts. We stop at a rest area about 20 minutes south so we can enjoy today’s scones while sitting still. We arrive at Nockamixon

Ten Days in Maine

17-27 September 2022,  Saturday, Freeport, Maine  Our departure from camp is unhurried and we have an easy drive to Freeport, Maine. Camp is soon set up again, this time at Cedar Haven Family Campground. The campground is less than a mile from G&N’s home, but it’s across 295 from us, so we have to drive 4.5 miles to get there. It’s wonderful to see them again, especially after two years
