Exploring North America

Tuesday in Bellevue

5 September 2017, Tuesday S and K return to work after Labor Day weekend. O and I continue with reorganization, cleaning and meal prep. Vincent is now wearing his shiny new passenger car license. Zephy adjusts to slippery wood floors in her new home, an inconvenience mitigated by the fact that there is also a new backyard in which to romp and in which there are old bones to discover.

Moving Day

1-4 September, 2017, Friday-Monday, Labor Day weekend We all manage to move S and K’s possessions to their new rental house in Bellevue. Moving is interspersed with shopping: groceries, gear at REI, new furniture at Ikea… and cleaning and cooking.

To Ellensburg WA and Redmond

31 August 2017, Thursday Today we have a scenic drive across Idaho, then smoky eastern Washington with a stop in Ellensburg at Winegars for thick, chocolaty milkshakes. We buy a flat of pears for $10.00. Then it is on to Redmond where S and K greet us in a rather chaotic-looking apartment as they are preparing for their move to Bellevue, WA.

On to St Regis MT.

30 August 2017, Wednesday At 6 am it is still quite dark. We dress and empty out Wglwof. By the time we have finished washing up, it is light enough to strike the tent. We arrive at the Trapper Grille near Signal Mountain two minutes after it opens at 7 am. We enjoy a substantial breakfast and acquire two morning glory muffins for tomorrow’s breakfast. Then we begin our day’s

Garnet Canyon Hike

29 August 2017, Tuesday This morning we both feel surprisingly good after yesterday’s hike. We decide to drive to the Lupine Meadows trailhead and go as far as we can up the switchbacks that lead to Garnet Canyon. We get a later than expected start because of a long conversation with our next campsite neighbors about travelling in Vincent. They are on a two week vacation in Yellowstone and Grand

Cascade Canyon Hike

28 August 2017, Monday We arrive at the Jenny Lake parking area around 10 am. During peak season, the parking lot here is often full as this is the trailhead for one of the most popular hikes at Grand Teton NP, the Jenny Lake loop with side trips to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Our goal is to visit the falls and the point, but we are really interested in

Touring Grand Teton NP

27 August 2017, Sunday This morning the campground empties early. We say goodby to our neighbors and they wish us a safe journey. Before leaving, they tell us that their favorite restaurant in Grand Teton NP is The Grille next to Signal Mountain Lodge. O and I gaze around empty loop N and decide that Sunday morning may be the best time to look for walk-up campsites. We put a

Two Ocean Lake

26 August 2017, Saturday Grand Teton NP After a lovely early morning breakfast of blueberry pancakes we drive to the Two Ocean Lake trailhead. The plateau to the east above the lake actually feeds water to rivers flowing both to the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean, but Two Ocean Lake really only sends water to the Pacific. On the drive up to the trailhead, we see one elk off in

To Grand Teton National Park

25 August 2017, Friday We leave the motel early to have the best shot at getting a good campsite. As we drive through Grand Teton NP, we stop to look at Jenny Lake Campground, a tents only location. It is already full, even though it is not yet 9 am. We drive on to Colter Bay Campground, a much larger facility that allows RV’s and tents. There are plenty of

To Jackson WY

24 August 2017, Thursday Basin Campground to Jackson WY We move on today from Montana with the idea that it may be easier to find a campsite at Grand Teton NP on a Friday morning than on a Saturday morning. We drive south to Cody WY and then turn west up the very scenic Shoshone River Canyon. We enter Yellowstone NP as we drive over Sylvan Pass and turn along
