Old Rocky Brook Road B&B and Dildo Run Provincial Park

Puss Puss

Today we leave Pistolet Bay and head south in a driving rain and a strong south wind. Nonetheless the trip goes well, and we arrive at the Old Rocky Brook Road B&B by mid-afternoon. Our host is off running errands, but there is a note and room key left for us. The B&B is beautiful and our room is very comfortable. In the absence of our host we are greeted by Puss Puss, the true mistress of the house. After seeking dinner in Deer Lake we return to the B&B and meet our gracious hostess, Patsy, who makes us feel very welcome.

Fish cakes and beans for breakfast!

O and I opt for a traditional Newfoundland breakfast at Old Rocky Brook Road B&B. That’s fishcakes and beans for the uninitiated. They are served with fresh fruit, including Newfoundland blueberries picked this morning, yogurt, toast and coffee. We’re stuffed! After breakfast we have a lovely chat with Patsy and then take our leave and drive towards Dildo Run Provincial Park.

Our campsite is right on Dildo Run.

We arrive by mid-afternoon and are greeted by the warden at the entry kiosk who is quite friendly and addresses O as “my dear sir.” He advises us as to which water spigot has the best tasting water (treated with UV instead of chlorine) and orients us to the park. The washrooms are a bit of a walk from our site, but they have hot showers, a kitchen shelter, washing machines and dryers, and free wifi. And our campsite is the most beautiful of the trip! We have a gorgeous view out over Dildo Run and our own gravel beach which is graced by a visit from a greater yellowlegs. O and I agree that it might be nice to spend a week or two here.

As we are admiring the view, the wind picks up, blowing directly into camp. It takes both of us to set up the tent without losing it in the wind. We arrange the tarp so the windward side drops close to the ground acting as a wind break. I think we are prepared for tonight’s rain.
