Monday in Ely

7 August 2017, Monday

By the time we wake this morning we have both come to the conclusion that the 17 foot Pak Canoe won’t work for us. It is a bit awkward to carry due to its weight and to the location of the thwart forward of the portage yoke. If O’s arms were about 4 inches longer it might work, but that is not the case. We do like the sturdy structure of the Pak Canoe, but we probably need the 150T instead of the 17 footer.

We return to Piragis after breakfast where we finally meet Steve Schon with whom I have been communicating via email. He will check into the specifics of the 15T dimensions for us. Meanwhile we make arrangements to rent a kevlar canoe from Piragis and arrange a shuttle to our entry point for 7 am tomorrow. We purchase some large slices of pie for an early breakfast, take care of more packing details, and head to the International Wolf Center for the afternoon.

International Wolf Center.
One of the “wolf ambassadors,” an arctic wolf.
He came over to say, “Hi.”

Dinner is delicious at Insula Restaurant – cassoulet for O and duck braised in Loon Juice hard cider for me. Back at Canoe On Inn we study the map a bit more and decide to go counter clockwise  on our route – longer portages to start, but flatter. We will get an early start on our trip tomorrow morning.
