We manage to sleep in until 7:15 this am. It’s pancakes again for breakfast.
Out of camp by 9:45, our first destination today is Vierling Brewery and
Restaurant in Marquette on the shore of Lake Superior. We cross the
central, rather flat part of the UP, and suddenly the terrain changes
to rugged hills. We catch our first ever view of Lake Superior,
intensely blue against the paler blue sky. At Vierling’s we have a tasty lunch of local whitefish sandwiches and excellent beer. O has a red ale
and I have a “Milk Shake Porter.” It is smooth and chocolatey.
We are back on the road and uncertain where we will camp tonight. We pass a sign that says we are in the central time zone, but our phones are
still on eastern daylight savings time. Is it 4:30 or 5:30? We decide
we will stay on eastern time for now. We check out the Gogebic Lake
State Park. It costs $31 for a season pass plus $19 a night for a
tent. For $50 we could stay in a motel! We return up the road to a
county park. Tents: only $10 per night, $18 if you need electricity. We go
for the $18 site to charge all our devices. When did we get so
dependent on technology?
